Why local SEO is different from general SEO
General SEO is about ranking for terms that people search nationally or globally. Local SEO is about appearing when someone searches for your service type in a specific location — "plumber Sydney", "accountant Brisbane", or "virtual receptionist small business Australia".
For Australian small businesses, local SEO is significantly more achievable than competing nationally. The competition set is smaller, the ranking signals are more controllable, and a strong local presence often translates directly to phone calls and enquiries.
Google Business Profile: the highest-impact free tool
If you do only one thing for your local SEO, claim and complete your Google Business Profile. This is the listing that appears in Google Maps and in the box that sometimes appears at the top right of search results.
To maximise your profile:
- Complete every section — business name, address (or service area if you're mobile), phone number, website, hours, and category.
- Choose the right primary category — this is the single most important field. It must accurately describe your core service, not a broad category.
- Add photos — businesses with photos receive significantly more clicks than those without. A few real photos of your work or premises is enough to start.
- Collect reviews — ask satisfied customers to leave a Google review. The number and recency of reviews is a ranking signal. Respond to every review — positive and negative.
- Post regularly — Google Business Profile has a posts feature. Publishing a short update or offer every 2–3 weeks signals to Google that your business is active.
According to BrightLocal's research, businesses with complete Google Business Profiles receive 7× more clicks than those with incomplete profiles. This is the highest-return 30 minutes you can spend on local SEO.
Keyword targeting: be specific, not broad
New websites cannot compete for broad terms like "web design" or "call centre services". These are dominated by large agencies, national directories (HiPages, Yellow Pages, Oneflare), and established businesses with years of domain authority.
The strategy for a new site is long-tail keyword targeting — specific phrases that combine your service, a qualifier, and a location or audience:
- "virtual receptionist for small business Australia" instead of "virtual receptionist"
- "appointment setting service no contract Australia" instead of "appointment setting"
- "website design for tradies Sydney" instead of "web design Sydney"
These terms have lower search volume but also significantly lower competition. A new site can realistically appear on page one for specific long-tail terms within 3–6 months of launch.
On-page basics that most small business sites miss
Before spending money on external SEO, make sure your website has these fundamentals in place:
- One clear H1 heading per page that contains your primary keyword
- A unique meta description for every page — this is what appears in Google results
- Your phone number and location on every page (or your service area if you operate nationally)
- Fast load times — test with Google PageSpeed Insights and aim for 80+ on mobile
- Mobile-responsive design — Google indexes the mobile version of your site first
- Internal links — each page should link to at least 2–3 other relevant pages on your site
How long does local SEO take?
For long-tail, low-competition terms: visible results within 2–4 months of launch for a well-structured site. For moderately competitive local terms: typically 4–8 months. For highly competitive terms dominated by established businesses: 12+ months of consistent effort.
The businesses that see the fastest results are those that launch with technically correct websites, complete their Google Business Profile, and consistently publish useful content that targets specific long-tail questions their customers are actually searching.
